
The Robert L Spitzer memorial award is given annually to an individual who has been selected because of their contribution in the fields of nosology, classification and assessment. The 2017 awardee is Dr Geoffrey M. Reed – Senior Project Officer, Department Of Mental Health And Substance Abuse, World Health Organization, for the revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) mental and behavioural disorders. Geoff is essentially single-handedly running the ICD-11 revision project for the chapters on mental and behavioural disorders, and has established the Global Clinical Practice Network to enable field studies of the ICD-11, with more than 14,000 mental health care professionals in 152 countries signed up as members. Geoff gave the below lecture on the International Classification of Diseases as the recipient of the award at the Columbia Psychiatry Grand Rounds – October 4th, 2017.
